À propos

KILLOWEN, or KILLOWNEY, a parish, in the barony of KINNALMEAKY, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 4 miles (W.) from Bandon, on the road from that place to Dunmanway; containing 432 inhabitants. It comprises 1260 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act; the land is generally good, but the old system of agriculture is pursued, and the heavy wooden plough is still in use. Mamore is the residence of S. B. Beamish, Esq.

The living is a rectory, in the diocese of Cork, and in the patronage of Lord Kinsale: the tithes amount to £140. 12. 9. Divine service is performed in a house licensed by the bishop.

In the R. C. divisions it forms part of the union or district of Templemartin. Here is a Sunday school, supported by the rector. A large mass of white quartz is called by the peasantry the "holy stone," around which, according to tradition, the priest formerly assembled the parishioners for public worship.
